Kel's Journal

Chapter 1

Kevin laid down on his bed, staring at his ceiling. He wants Rebecca, and hes so afraid of rejection. Its just like everything else in his life. No matter what hes ever done, hes always failed at it. Hes no good at sports, not really intelligent, nor is he good at much else. The only thing he is good with is song.

Songs are an important tool for Kevin. He doesnt like to talk much, but put on a song and hell sing. He loves just about every style of music for him. He even has a perfect song for every mood. His computer is full of music, using the sharing programs to their fullest. His parents even got him a cable modem just for the exact purpose of keeping the phone line open.

Kevin is simply depressed. He doesnt feel like he could possibly become Rebeccas boyfriend, but thats the only thing in life he wants.

"...And now heres a request from Tiffany in West Windsor. Its Vanessa Carltons "Thousand Miles," said the DJ coming out of Kevins radio. Kevin loved listening to the request lines at night. He loved when they put the people on the air, just to find out why they picked that song. He knew the deejay at XL 103 very well. Kevins passion is music, so he liked meeting people involved in the business. Even local deejays were people he liked to know. If it could help him get a song he liked on the air, he wanted to use it.

As he was listening, he wondered about Rebecca. Is she listening to this station? I wonder what kind of music she likes.

Thats when Kevin came up with an idea. What if he sent her a message through song? That was his favorite medium, and the one he was most comfortable in. So he dialed up the station to the request lines.

"Hello? XL 103."

"Hi Carla? Its Kevin." He was so into knowing the station, he didnt just know the deejays, he knew the people working the phones. "Could I talk to John?"

"Sure thing. Ill patch you into him."

"Hello?" John questioned.

"Hi John, its Kevin."

"Hey, what can I do for you small stuff?" He liked to call Kevin small stuff. He knew he was short (about 5'4"), but his shortcomings were magnified by the 6'4" DJ.

"Ive got a special request for you to do. I want to send a song out to a girl. I just dont know which one."

"Okay. Whats her name?"

"Rebecca."

"Ill find something for you. I normally dont do this, but youre the exception."

"Oh, and John?"

"Yeah?"

"Dont say its from me. Just yet."

"Okay."

"Thanks Johnny."

"No sweat. Good night."

Kevin sat and listened to the radio for about twenty minutes. He was patient, realizing that Johnny could only work so fast in finding a song.

"...All right listeners. Ive got a special request for a girl named Rebecca in Lawrenceville. Its from a secret admirer. So for Rebecca, its Edwin McCains Ill Be."

Kevin listened as Johnny played the request. Great pick. He was shocked he didnt pick it himself. He loved the song, and figured it to be perfect.

Ill be, your crying shoulder

Ill be, a love suicide

Ill be, better when Im older

Ill be, the greatest fan of your life

Even just the chorus explained the way Kevin felt. Rebecca was his only goal.
